Inglourious Basterds Spoilerific Review-ish Part Zwei (2)

inglourious-basterds-0905-pp05-500x340.jpgFinally got back into it. In Part Eins of my Iglourious Basterds review, I discussed the most used argument that it wasn't true to history. This time I'm going to start with the complaint that the film is anti-German.

I'm not giving this any more than one paragraph because it's just stupid. The film isn't anti-German, it's anti-Nazi, and it's pretty clear that what the heroes dislike about the Nazi's is their anti-semitic activities. Firstly, there's 2 German characters working for the good guys (Bridget von Hammersmark and Sgt. Hugo Stiglitz). Secondly, I found I felf sympathy for a couple of the Nazis who were killed. They were constructed beautifully into a grey area. I'm talking about SGT. Rachtman (loses his head to the Bear Jew) and Master SGT. Wilhelm. If the film was anti-German there'd be no grey areas. So there.inglourious_basterds16.jpg

The last criticism I'm going to discuss is the one that goes "the heroes are just as bad as the Nazis at the end". *sigh* Obscure movie reference time. This time from Clerks. Randy and Dante are discussing the innocent contractors that would have been killed at the end of Return of the Jedi when a Blue Collar man says:
You know, any contractor willing to work on that Death Star knew the risks. If they were killed, it was their own fault. A roofer listens to this... (taps his heart) not his wallet.
Every single person in that theatre belonged there.

Did you know that if Hitler hadn't killed himself it would have been difficult to hold him responsible for the "Final Solution"? It's true. One of the reasons that there are ignorant people out there who don't believe the holocaust happened is because there is absolutely no order from Hitler instructing the "Final Solution" to go ahead. He preferred to give orders of that nature orally only, sneaky fuck.

Look, if that's the reason you don't like this film, there's not much I do but agree to disagree. And recommend that you avoid watching any revenge film, any Frank Miller written/directed film, or anything where the review uses the words "come-uppance". Your shiny view of the world won't like it.
