New Format! Woo Hoo!

Hey ramblers!
So, with the new template designer in blogger, I've decided to jump on the bandwagon and mix my blog up a bit. I think it's a little lighter and makes much better use of the space.

Whaddya think?
Any complaints, comments, suggestions?

Pretty please?

Dear Anonymous...

Hi pets.
As a lot of my regular readers (and twitter followers) know, this blog hit a spectacular milestone today. That’s right, I received my very first idiotic, narrow-minded comment from Anonymous. It’s on the post directly after this one, but so that you don’t have to leave this page to see what it says, here it is:complaint
I was so excited. As a horror/exploitation/art-house/foreign film blogger, you aren’t important until someone thinks you’re disgusting. It turns out that Anonymous had tried to post the same comment on the review of Deadgirl I posted on (Cool)Shite. Knowing that at least explains where the points in the comment are from. It’s still idiotic and narrow-minded, but at least I can see what movie brought it on.

The post started receiving support comments (all of whom identified themselves) and talked with a lot of people on twitter and there was a couple of things that became clear. Firstly, Anonymous is a self-righteous coward, secondly, as a woman I feel obliged to answer the charge that people who watch horror films like Deadgirl think rape is sexy or get enjoyment from witnessing violence against women. I’m not going to waste time defending my review. I used to have a t-shirt that said “Sarcasm is just one of the services I offer”. Maybe I should add that to my bio on (Cool)Shite. Obviously Anonymous has no sense of humour though, so I don’t think I’ll bother.

irreversibleSo Anonymous thinks horror films like Deadgirl, Martyrs, or Irreversible glorify violence against women and that people who watch them find rape sexy. I have some questions for you, Anonymous. Firstly,  are you trying to tell me that the film industry should not portray rape or assault? Or that people should not choose to watch these films? Why? Is it so the existence of unpretty or unhappy things can easily be forgotten or denied? Perhaps it’s so that people who experience these nasty things will think they’re the only ones and keep their mouths shut?

What about movies like Iron Jawed Angels? That’s the movie about a group of uppity birds thinking they had the right to vote (FYI – sarcasm). You know the one, where the women get sent to a work camp so they declare a hunger strike and get force-fed. The force-feeding scenes are pretty horrific, best if we shield the worlds eyes from such nastiness. Nevermind that it’s a true story and an integral step in the Equal Rights movement. After all, sexual assault is true and real but you obviously don’t approve of it being made a public issue.

Tori AmosKnowledge is power. It’s a cliché but, like most clichés, its quite true. One of the greatest barriers stopping victims of assault (domestic, sexual, any really) from coming forward is that they lack the knowledge that they aren’t alone. They aren’t aware that the world knows it happens and that there is help available. They also lack the encouragement and inspiration to do what is required to free themselves f rom their isolation. There’s a fabulous singer named Tori Amos who was sexually assaulted after a gig just before she started making albums. Her first solo album Little Earthquakes contains the song Me and a Gun, an a cappella number describing her assault. She then went on to co-found RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) and went on a year-long campaign called, wait for it, “Unlock the Silence”.

And so, Anonymous, I throw your charges back at you. The only intelligent reason I can think of to ban movies with assault is to hide it’s existence. The only reason to disparage those watching it is to encourage ignorance. If you don’t like watching horror films, then don’t watch. If you have the opinion that they shouldn’t be made, then stand up.

I’m not just speaking to the coward who posted the above comment, I’m talking to anybody who has ever posted an abusive comment and hidden behind Anonymous. You call me and mine pathetic, at least we have identities. If you have an opinion, stand the fuck up and own it.

Get on twitter and discuss it.
Email me and explain yourself.
Otherwise, shut up and fuck off.

From here on in, any comments posted under Anonymous will be deleted for being gutless. Only identities can have opinions here.

Love,
Rach

The 4-Week Subtitle Sensation!

Orright all? What’s occurring?

Here at Rach’s Media Opinions we have an event. It’s huge. Massive, even. On Tuesday night, my best mate is going away with her folks for 4 weeks . Granted I’d give the left testicle of God to go with her (Mauritius *sob*), but I can’t, so instead I’m house-sitting their 2 (that’s right, TWO) flat-screen televisions.

Consolation prize, yes, but I’m making the most of it. How am I going to spend my magical 4 weeks of magical TV alone time? I’m havin a foreign movie marathon, that’s how!

See, the thing with watching a subtitled movie is that you can’t really walk around or do too much else. That makes it difficult to watch them in a share house where people keep asking you to do shit. I’ve had a number of foreign films in my collection waiting for a moment where I could dedicate my uninterrupted attention, and I’m finally getting the chance!

Currently in my collection:

  • Thirst
  • JSA
  • Nosferatu (technically silent, but you still have to pay attention)
  • Audition
  • Dead or Alive
  • Fudoh
  • Les Diaboliques

Already on my list (but don’t own):

  • Let The Right One In
  • The Chaser
  • The Returner
  • Inside
  • Salo
  • Full Metal Yakuza
  • I’m a Cyborg but that’s OK
  • Battle Royale
  • Versus
  • Cure
  • Memories of Murder

I need more. That’s only 18. I NEED MOOOOOOOORE!!!!

I want 28 that I can get hold of. 1 a day (though that’s not necessarily how they’ll be watched). So I need a massive bunch of suggestions just in case my rental stores don’t have copies (stoopid Perth).

HELP!!!!

I am Officially LAMB #435

Hey all!
I know I've been a little slack on my blog this week, but there's 2 reasons (excuses) for it.
Firstly, Monday I went to Raggamuffin, a Reggae music festival. Fantastic music but got stoned just by standing in the crowd. Ended up with the munchies by the time I got home! No where near a computer all day.
Secondly, Tuesday was Australia Day. It's un-Australian to do anything that can be considered work on Australia unless you don't have a choice (i.e. those serving food to the rest of Australia who can't be shagged cooking).
Those are my defenses and I'm sticking to them.

But on the "good news" front, I have officially been welcomed as a member of LAMB (Large Association of Movie Blogs). I am LAMB #435. Check my post out here.

Dumb Dumb Stupid Vista!

OK, so I wrote a nice long post yesterday, had it all ready, and my laptop reset itself. I was writing it on Windows Live Writer and I lost the whole thing. It was an epic post and the world will never see it :(

But there is one part of the missing post that I need to repeat. Kingmob6 of Dear Bastards… has nominated me for the Kreativ Blogger Award. Cos he’s a gentleman and a scholar.
This award has some rules to follow and here they are:

1. Thank the person who nominated you for this award.
2. Copy the logo and place it on your blog.
3. Link to the person who nominated you for this award.
4. Name 7 things about yourself that people might find interesting.
5. Nominate 7 Kreativ Bloggers.
6. Post links to the 7 blogs you nominate.
7. Leave a comment on each of the blogs letting them know they have been nominated.

I hate that I’ve already done this. I can’t even remember what I put, but here’s my 7 things about me:

  1. I make chainmail jewellery and sell it online. If you’d like to tale a look, my store is here.
  2. I make all of my own background/layouts for my blogs/twitter. It’s possible I have too much time on my hands.
  3. The first time I saw Aliens I had nightmares for a week. I refused to watch it again for 4 years. Now it’s one of my favourites!
  4. Over the years there have been bands/artists who have moved in and out of my favour. Only 1 artist has stayed in from the get go. Tori Amos. I can’t not listen to her music.
  5. Kingmob6 mention his inability to dislike Nic Cage. I have the same problem with Robert Downey Jr. It’s not so much of a problem nowadays, but pre-“Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang” (and post-prison) it was. I even liked the Alley McBeal episodes he was in…
  6. My dad is responsible for a lot of my tastes. My love of computers, books, you name it. Growing up, dad would get home in time to watch “Dr Who” with us. It’s no wonder I’m so into sci-fi.
  7. On the 24th of November, 2007, I suffered a brain haemorrhage. I spent 2 months in hospital, 6 months as an outpatient, and another 12 months recovering. Neat, huh?
OK, that’s done. Now for my nominations:
  1. Kingmob6 of Dear Bastards…
I know it’s bad form to re-nominate the person who nominated you, but I read Mobs blog all the time, and he got me onto Cool(Shite). Great reviews, great personality, great bloke. End of.
  2. Heavenztrash of In Nervous Convulsion
Another wicked blogger and instigator of the 2010 New Years Resolution to empty the “to watch pile”. He also scored an interview with Jenny Spain from Deadgirl and it’s rilly-rilly good.
  3. Forestaken of The Ultimate Negative
Fairly new (like me). She does very cool reviews about movies that aren’t often talked about. Check out her review of Mary Poppins. It’s reeeeaaally well written.
  4. Braincrayon of Cinematografo Dei Trash
Attempting to watch and review Quentin Tarantino’s Top 20 Grindhouse movies. Can’t wait to read the reviews :)
  5. Mattsuzaka of Chuck Norris Ate my Baby
Awesome movie review site. Matt has some very entertaining regular segments and has fun with his reviews. You really should already be reading this.
  6. FilmDrunk at FilmDrunk
Hilarious blog. Covers movie news and reviews with tongue firmly set in cheek. If you don't take life too seriously, you should be subscribing to this.
  7. TheIglooKeeper of Igloo of the Uncanny
One of the first movie review blogs I started reading. His post of the trailer for The Exorcist II: The Heretic inspired me to start my "to watch" list.
So that's my list. Hope you enjoy checking out my favourite blogs :)
